How We Tested Shared Hosting

Here’s our criteria for testing shared hosting speed:

Testing Environment:

  • Fresh WordPress Installation
  • Astra Pro Theme
  • Identical Content
  • No Additional Optimization Plugins
  • GTmetrix for Page Speed Testing
  • loader.io for Load Management Testing

Metrics Measured:

We start with a fresh install of WordPress. We used the Astra Pro theme as it’s one of the most efficient and popular themes available. Identical content (posts and pages) are used for testing. And, to get the truest picture of the host’s speed, we didn’t add any additional optimization plugins.

We use GTmetrix to measure page speed and core web vitals. And we use loader.io to test load management and concurrent user performance during traffic spikes.

Test Results

Host TTFB FCP LCP Fully Loaded
InMotion Hosting 143ms 279ms 293ms 342ms
Hostinger 165ms 329ms 352ms 352ms
GreenGeeks 183ms 382ms 514ms 553ms

All of our recommended shared hosting providers here did a great job with website page loading speed and Core Web Vitals.

InMotion Hosting

InMotion Hosting was the fastest in our testing with outstanding speed and performance. FCP, Speed Index, and LCP were all under 300ms, with TTFB at an excellent 143ms and full page load time of 342ms. What it translates to is almost instantaneous page loading along with no blocking time or layout shift.

Hostinger

Hostinger came in a very close second in homepage speed testing, with FCP, Speed Index, and LCP all just over 300ms. TTFB was also excellent at 165ms with full page load at 352ms.

GreenGeeks

GreenGeeks also posted impressive results, though speed and core web vitals were just a bit higher. TTFB was good at 183ms as was full page load time at 553ms.

Check out my previous article for a more in-depth explanation of Core Web Vitals and their importance. Once again, while all three of these hosts were impressive, InMotion Hosting was the fastest.

GreenGeeks 115ms 1521ms 0
InMotion Hosting 394ms 2300ms 0
Hostinger 2313ms 10002ms 22.1%

GreenGeeks

GreenGeeks was actually the best shared host when it comes to traffic spikes and heavy load testing. While their speed and core web vitals numbers were behind InMotion and Hostinger, GreenGeeks clearly produced the best results during our 250 concurrent users test. There were no timeouts or errors, stability was excellent, and the average response time of 115ms is extremely fast for a shared hosting provider.

InMotion Hosting

InMotion Hosting also produced impressive load testing results for a shared hosting provider. At 250 concurrent users, there were no errors (0%). All 250 requests were successful with no timeouts. The server remained stable throughout the entire test. InMotion Hosting’s load test results showed no request queues spiraling out of control, no resource exhaustion, and much better traffic management than most other shared hosting providers.

Hostinger

Unlike InMotion Hosting and GreenGeeks, Hostinger did not do well under load testing. Our results showed a 22.1% error rate with the 10 second timeout ceiling hit. Hostinger did not sustain concurrent traffic. While InMotion started to slow down, Hostinger started failing requests completely.

However, keep in mind that our load test was 250 concurrent users. A small blog may never hit that level of traffic. And again, Hostinger did produce excellent results with our homepage speed testing.

These Hosts Didn't Make The Cut Why These Hosts Didn’t Make the List

Bluehost – Site builder websites are very slow.

DreamHost – Very slow website speed and bad user interface.

GoDaddy – Unimpressive website speed and inconsistent customer support.

HostGator – Slow website speed and slow responding support.

SiteGround – High renewal rates, putting them into the managed WordPress category.

Who Should Use Shared Hosting?

Great For:

  • Small Business Websites
  • Blogs
  • Portfolio Sites
  • Local Businesses
Not Ideal For:

  • High Traffic Sites
  • Large WooCommerce Stores
  • Membership Websites

While a number of shared hosts (including the ones we recommend) produce excellent results when it comes to page speed and core web vitals, another real test comes during heavier periods of traffic. Here’s the area where Managed WordPress hosting or Cloud VPS hosting is usually superior.

It’s for the above reasons, that we recommend Shared Hosting primarily for smaller websites with low to moderate traffic. You can check out our recommendations for cloud hosting here.

We would only recommend shared hosting for small WooCommerce sites. See our Best WooCommerce Hosting article for more details.

When should I upgrade to cloud hosting?

If your website has become mission-critical, is your primary source of income, or you’re starting to get significant traffic spikes, then we would recommend upgrading to cloud hosting.

Overall, in our study of the fastest shared hosting, InMotion Hosting is our top recommendation. InMotion is perfect for many types of websites and provides outstanding website speed and Core Web Vitals.

For those on a more limited budget, Hostinger delivered fast page loading and good core web vitals as well. However, if you expect a lot of concurrent traffic, then Hostnger is probably not the best choice as load testing results were not very good.

Finally, if you need a shared hosting plan that allows you to grow with unlimited website hosting, good page speed, and excellent load performance, then GreenGeeks is a great alternative green hosting choice.
