This comparison focuses on two of my favorite web hosting companies: InMotion Hosting and WP Engine. In the past, we compared WP Engine’s managed WordPress hosting to InMotion Hosting’s business hosting plans. However, with the addition of the managed WordPress hosting line at InMotion, we’re now better able to compare these two excellent web hosts more accurately, rather than matching up managed and non-managed hosting plans.
Looking at these two web hosting options, first remember that with WP Engine you’re getting pure WordPress hosting—which is fine for existing sites or if that’s all you’re looking for. With InMotion, you’re getting a complete online package including a domain name, email, etc. Given those factors, if you’re creating a website for the first time, InMotion is probably the better choice. WP Engine is better for those with existing sites or business and enterprise WordPress hosting.

Advantages of InMotion Hosting over WP Engine:
WP Engine and InMotion Hosting are two of the best web hosts when it comes to website speed and performance. And, this category is much closer than you might think. InMotion’s Max Speed Zone Technology and UltraStack servers make them one of the best performing cPanel web hosts. However, with WP Engine’s managed WordPress hosting, you get their EverCache technology along with optimized environment and fully managed CDN.
While this comparison is very close, InMotion Hosting is the winner for speed and performance. See some of our sample test results below:
Whereas WP Engine includes complete website staging functionality that is extremely user-friendly, the website staging with InMotion is provided via BoldGrid. Additionally, WP Engine includes a development environment along with staging and production. So, because they include multiple environments and have one of the easiest to use staging interfaces, WP Engine is the winner here.
When it comes to data backup and restore, WP Engine is the winner. With WP Engine, you get automated daily backups, the ability to restore from the previous 30 days, and snapshot backup capability where you can perform an on-demand backup when you need to. By contrast, InMotion now requires you to purchase a separate backup option with their business hosting, and with their managed WordPress hosting, data backup is available via JetPack.
The customer support at both WP Engine and InMotion is outstanding. You get responsive, helpful, and friendly support with both of these web hosts. Because of their continued responsive and helpful performance, InMotion Hosting is the winner here.
