WP Engine Adds New WordPress Update Feature

With the latest version of WordPress (4.3) just released, WP Engine has introduced a new feature with their managed WordPress hosting that will provide customers with more control over their updates.

WP Engine has always provided managed upgrades to WordPress. However, in the past you had to wait for them to perform their extensive updating process—or have to contact support if you wanted the update performed earlier. With the new WordPress update process, you are notified of an existing update in your WP Engine dashboard. When you’re ready to upgrade, just press the Update button and the process will begin.

Now some of you may be thinking that this is no big deal—after all aren’t you notified in the WordPress dashboard about available updates too? That’s true, but the updating process that WP Engine performs is much more extensive and thorough. And after all, isn’t that what managed hosting is all about?

When WP Engine updates your WordPress version, the process goes something like this:

  • Your website is tested before updating to make sure everything is working.
  • A backup point is created.
  • Your site is updated with the new WordPress core version.
  • Your site is then reloaded and tested to make sure everything is performing normally.
  • If things are not working correctly after the update, your site is reverted back to the prior version of WordPress. And, WP Engine will make sure your site is working as it did before the update.
  • You receive an email informing you of a successful or unsuccessful WordPress update along with any other steps you need to take.

I used the new update feature at WP Engine and everything worked smoothly with the update being performed quickly—after which, I received the following email notice:
